ABOUT THE NAME

The reason Akron exists, as it is known, is because of the Ohio & Erie Canal. The canal created a 308 mile long waterway connecting the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico. The Akron-Cleveland segment of the canal opened July 4th, 1825 and the entire canal was completed in 1832. From then until the beginning of the Civil War, Ohio was the third most economically prosperous state in the country – in large part due to the canal system.
