ABOUT THE NAME
Before the 1950s, amusement parks were abundant, and Summit Beach Park, known as Akron’s “Million Dollar Playground,” stood among them at Summit Lake. In 1918, the park introduced a thrilling new wooden roller coaster called Over the Top, acclaimed as the nation’s steepest and fastest. Tragically, in July of that year, disaster struck when the train cars derailed, resulting in the loss of four lives.
