ABOUT THE NAME
The Jumbo Mill fire of March 1886 was a total loss, but amazingly no one was killed in the blaze. The eight-story gargantuan oatmeal mill, owned by F. Schumacher, was one of the largest plants in the US at the time. Akron newspapers described the event as “the most disastrous conflagration that has ever befallen the city.” A local Akron brewery offered to buy some smoke and fire damaged grain from Schumacher and he refused, saying “I’ll let it rot first. I’ll have no part in making alcohol to corrupt our youth.”
