ABOUT THE NAME
The USS Akron was among the largest flying objects ever built. It was manufactured by Goodyear in Akron and first launched in August 1931. This flying aircraft carrier provided long distance scouting with it’s 5 skyhook attached Sparrowhawk recon planes in support of Navy fleet operations. On April 4th 1933, the rigid airship was destroyed off the coast of New Jersey in a thunderstorm. This dirigible crash was the worst airship disaster in history, killing 73 of the 76 people on board.
