ABOUT THE NAME

Akron owes its existence to the Ohio & Erie Canal, a monumental waterway spanning 308 miles, linking the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. The Akron-Cleveland segment of the canal commenced operations on July 4th, 1825, with its entirety completed in 1832. From that point until the onset of the Civil War, Ohio thrived as the nation’s third most prosperous state, largely attributable to the economic benefits bestowed by the canal system.
